UA Canada National Apprenticeship Competition 2010

United Association Local 488 in Edmonton did an outstanding job of hosting the National Apprenticeship Competition held on June 1st to 3rd 2010 at their new educational facility, the Alberta Pipe Trades College. By all reports everyone enjoyed the events that were part of the competition and we look forward to next year’s event to be held in Kitchener Waterloo ON at Local 527.
The UA would like to thank Larry Matychuk Business Manager of Local 488 for hosting the event and Bill Wilson, Training Coordinator and his staff for taking care of the details. Glen Aspen, Instructor at 488, was the event coordinator and did most of the work on development and implementation of the skills tests, as well as hotels, shuttles, and so on, right up to the awards banquet. We would like extend a special thank you for Glen and recognition of his hard work in preparing for this event.
The Apprentices that were part of the event were up to the challenge of trying to win a spot at the national in their trade to enable them to compete in the International competition coming up in August at the Instructor Training Program in Ann Arbor Michigan. The winners in each of the trade’s events were:

All of the contestants are to be congratulated for winning in their regional contests and for taking up the challenge to compete in Edmonton for the national title. We want to express our thanks to these apprentices, who will no doubt be the next leaders in their local unions as Journeypersons in the future. We know what it takes to put yourself forward in a competitive public event and we congratulate each and every one for taking up the challenge.
