Downtown aside, the farther from the centre, the higher the growth over the past five years, the census confirms. Montreal’s population rose just 2.1 per cent on the urban fringe (under a 10-minute drive from the core), 3.4 per cent in near suburbs, four per cent in intermediate bedroom communities and seven per cent in municipalities on the farthest reaches of the metropolis.
