I am an ex BC
Forest Service Fire fighter with the suppression crews, the original yellow and greens in the 80's when we actually had a Forest Service... out of the FSMD stationed at the mouth of the Fraser River in Vancouver we had a fleet of over 200 boats that patrolled the entire coast as well as every river and lake in BC, we ran our own heavy equipment and were completely self contained in which we had our own machinists, shipwrights, heavy equipment operators, semi trailers, fire fighters that could be dispatched at a moment's notice. We didn't rely on technology which is unreliable, but on visual from our fire towers pinpointing exact locations as well as fire behaviour, wind speeds, etc. our crews as suppression were a rap attack and we knocked the fires down fast, we didn't allow fires to burn for a couple days before being dispatched.
We worked from 6am till dusk and used the amazing MARS water bombers which absolutely were a God send for this province! We had the crews and equipment as well as the personnel to get the job done! We didn't bring in for profit companies to fight our fires nor did we bring in from other countries like Mexico that have
NO IDEA how to fight a fire in our mountainous terrain. We NEVER had smoke in the valley back in the day... we also depended on the locals for advice as well as the logging companies as they know the terrain and when the wind changes, we no longer follow this practice because the new wildfire service is to arrogant.
In 1987 our real Forest Service was sold out to private companies and we have never been the same since..... please also remember we used to have Rangers and crews stationed in every community throughout BC until the late 80’s…
