I lived in Montréal for 5 years and Vancouver for over 4. Same toxic uncommunicative attitude everywhere, under the guise of “kind” words. This has deeper implications the closer the relationships get; it might be negligibly annoying at the post office, but quite hurtful in a friendship or more.
In my opinion Canadians aren’t necessarily cold; they’re just distant because they themselves can’t be sure about what the other person actually thinks of them. Everyone exercises a good amount of caution.
Unfortunately my siblings had the same experience, so did my in-laws and other European acquaintances who moved to Canada, all pursuing different careers and at different cities and universities, ranging from science, finance, business, medicine, real estate and arts.
