British Columbia has become the first province in Canada to introduce a minimum wage and other protections for gig-based workers.
Starting September 3, workers for apps like Uber, DoorDash, Skip the Dishes, and Lyft, must be paid $20.88/h for the duration of an assignment (from the moment they accept until its completion).
The pay standards do not apply to the time spent waiting between assignments, and tips from customers do not count towards the workers' earnings. The platforms will be required to cover any shortfall in earnings to ensure workers receive the full minimum wage.
