This is a tough one, because there is no Ukrainian equivalent. Essentially, food banks are there for people who do not have other options. Food banks have a limited amount of food available.
The host is responsible for providing food while you stay with her. So there is no need to take food from the food bank while staying with a host. I think she recognized that you were trying to contribute and that this is confusing. But it’s not appropriate to use a food bank unless you really need it.
On the other hand, if you are living independently and you need help with food, there is no shame in using the food bank.
It is tricky.
